My View of the American Way of Life

My teenage son had a date the other night with a very nice girl from his high school. I believe it was a Saturday. During the day he went to her parents house for a introduction and a short visit. Later that day, my son received a text from the father of said young lady which asked the question: Are you a Republican or a Democrat? My son then wanted to know what he was politically speaking. My first response in all questions is to have the questioner use due diligence in researching the question on his own and then I will help but in this case I responded with basic beliefs from the two major parties. My son then told the father of the date he was a Republican. I was somewhat surprised by the followup question: Ronald Reagan Republican or George W. Bush Republican. Since my son is too young to understand what a Reagan Republican was, I enlisted Youtube and Ronald Reagan's farewell speech in 1989 to help my son understand what Reagan was trying to do. After this, he decided the Reagan Republican was what he wanted to follow. This also seemed to agree with the father of the young girl and the date proceeded without further interrogation.

Two things of note:

A father that still takes an active role in what manner of creature comes calling on his daughter.

A father who still believes that young people should know more than what Kim Kardashian or Paris Hilton is wearing today.

Absolutely amazing

I am creating this blog entry from my new blackberry phone. Although this is slower than I usually type, I am a two finger typer at best anyway so no big deal. I wanted this style phone because it has wi fi and I can now get good phone service off the wireless in my house. The catch was I had to purchase the data plan. I really didn't want it and just considered it a frill I didn't need but now I ca see how people come to believe this is a necessity and not a luxury. The camera, while not fancy, is pretty fun also. The real deal is that it consolidates all my emails in one spot and I don't have to be tied to my computer. Isn't technology great!

Valentines Day

I should have gotten the dogs a Valentines card today. They are the only ones who care about you no matter what. Harley is crashed on my lap as I write this and he gets away with stuff I would beat my kids for even attempting. You know Tom T. Hall has a song about old dogs, children and watermelon wine which adequately my feelings most of the time. If you haven't heard it then you should look it up.
